Geography

Geography at Hexton

Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose.

A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils an awe and wonder about the world and the people in it which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about natural and human environments, about diverse places, people and resources whilst ensuring they develop a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We aim to provide children with a breadth of memorable experiences, to support our pupils to becoming curious and considerate global citizens. By the end of each stage of their education with us, they will be well equipped with the skills and the knowledge to explore the world around them and have a greater understanding of their planet. Children also develop a deep knowledge of our community and locality, understanding how they can contribute responsibly and sustainably to their local environment.

At Hexton JMI, children’s geography lessons cover a range of aspects of the natural and human world, including:

* processes and change

* human geography

* physical geography

* geographical vocabulary

* location and environments

* similarities and differences

Through a carefully planned progression of skills, children will explore the world around them using the following tools:

  • globes
  • maps
  • atlases
  • ICT
  • compasses and compass directions
  • aerial photographs
  • basic weather recording instruments
  • grid references
  • cultural artefacts
